OK, so this site is geared towards professional sound engineers, AV-Technicians, and anyone with a passion for technical audio. I do my best to round up news that I think is interesting to them from their field of employment and enjoyment. Thinking about things a little more, it’s my opinion that you people like gadgets, and tech stuff in your homes, studio and on the road as well.
So it is with that in mind, and not at all the fact that I just thought it was cool, that when I was offered the chance to review these universal remotes from One For All, I had no choice but to say yes.
First up is the Stealth URC 7781 Digital 12 - a remote capable of handling up to 12 different devices including your TV, Satellite box,VCR, DVD, CD player, etc etc etc.
Unless you’re familiar with the device, it’s not immediately obvious how to program it, but that’s a good thing, because you then read the instructions, and you don’t miss anything.
The quickest way to tune it to your device is to press and hold the ‘Magic’ button until it flashes, add a new device, scroll through the list of codes (which has never taken me more than 90 seconds). When your device switches to standby - you’ve got the code. Easy.
Escape your way out of there, and you’re home free, and barely need the instructions except for a few more in-depth functions. This slick, black, sexy looking control does everything your remote does. Even the least technical minded people will only take half an hour to get their heads round this little beauty.
Switching the controller to work with another device (once you’ve programmed it in) is just a matter of using the cursors near the top of the remote. Simple. It saves you fumbling around three or four remotes, and it saves on batteries. It also looks the business, and will impress your friends more than one you’d pick up in a service station on your way back from Minehead at 5am.
Audiotechnews didn’t use it to control his lights, or surround sound, because he doesn’t have the choice to do that in his home, but if you can, then… you can!
Great stuff.
Next up is the little sister of that beast above!
The One For All Zapper range are much simpler devices - and to give you an idea of how easy these are to program, I took these to my Mother’s house at Christmas.
I got sent two of these little babies, which meant that the girls in the house stood a chance of getting some say in the Christmas viewing. Whilst my brother took charge of the normal remotes, which he considers his birthright, the two girls got to change the channel, use the volume control, and mute the TV. Slightly too much power for anyone else to have if you’re a power hungry viewer, but if you’re more interested in getting drunk, like me, then it stops the arguments.
Thank you guys. You saved Christmas.
