A word of warning for anyone gigging in South Africa. Watch your back!
28 Year Old Johan Engelbrecht - sound engineer to Shane McCallaghan - was robbed by six men outside a pub in Bloemfontein. He was stabbed four times and left for dead; fortunately being found and taken to hospital by a punter.
“Six men got out of the bakkie and ran towards me. I wanted to run away or jump over a wall, but they were too fast.”
“They surrounded me, searched my pockets and took R1 000 and my new cellphone. The next moment one of them stabbed me in the arm from behind. They threw me on the ground. I fought for my life. When I wanted to fight back, they stabbed me three times with a knife and screwdriver in the back,” he said.
Bloemfontein is the capital city of the Free State Province of South Africa. The city’s Sesotho name is Mangaung, meaning “place of cheetahs” although it’s poetically known as “the city of roses”.

OK, I admit I am to Digico D1 and D5 desks what the 12 year old ‘me’ was to Jet from Gladiators when she met me at a public appearance at Bruntingthorpe Air Base; star struck, in absolute awe, and systematically boxing above my weight, but SO damn ready to knock one out.
So it’s with little surprise that the geekier side of me wants to shout out when anyone mentions Digico desks. “I’ve used one, look at me”.
No change today, when I read that Trevor Gilligan - FoH Engineer for Maximo Park chose to use a D5.
LSI Online report
“I started using digital when working with Oasis,” he says. “And the D5 is still only digital console that I can walk up to and get a mix out of without having to open a manual or start making calls. The routing is so easy, whoever designed it got it spot on.”
My only advice is don’t plug a Sony Ericson in. They don’t like it, and it can make the phrase ‘Showstopper’ mean something bad.

The world’s largest international trade show for consumer technologies have announced plans for a more Green Friendly ethos for their 2008 outing.
“We will do so by reducing energy consumption, increasing our recycling efforts, improving efficiency where possible, and making strides toward offsetting our unavoidable emissions. “ Says CEO Gary Shapiro of Consumer Electronics Assosiation.

Unfortunately it seems to be the case that if you say ‘Carbon footprint’ and ‘Offsetting’ a lot, then it entitles you to a lot of publicity and a holier than thou attitude.
But I’ll leave that kind of reporting to GREENBANG

As most of us in this sector of the industry are aware - recorded material is getting ‘louder’ in an effort to compete for the attention of your average listener. As Bob Katz, chief mastering engineer of Digital Domain says:
“The level of compact discs went up about 20 decibels in 20 years,”
This, coupled with the ever increasing use of MP3 players and the ‘normalizing’ software they often incorporate is worrying to hearing specialists. In fact it’s really grinding their gears.
“As a culture, we are becoming more used to loud noise,” said Monita Chatterjee, a hearing specialist at the University of Maryland, College Park. “I really feel like we are pushing it.”
Is she worrying unnecessarily? A Maryland chicken perhaps?
You can read a real life article here about it if you give a damn.

Walsall College and Rotheram College of Art and Technology are hosting courses which are designed and moderated by Roland to encourage the music industry in education.
Personally, I’ve always found their help desk ok, but if you work for Roland, they’re obviously sick of your ineptitude.
Just kidding. Aspects covered in the course include career development, product knowledge, marketing and communications. Audiotechnews thinks this sounds great.

Music For All are holding a charity dinner at Madame Tussaudes this Friday (23rd November). The price? £150 plus the fact you might have to bump into Status Quo. Apart from that, it looks good, as they boast ‘unlimited beer’ and one of the auction items is a drumming masterclass with Ian Paice.

HyperSonic Sound technology - an invention of the American Technology Corp is now available on the market. I remember first reading about it in about 2003, and decided to check it out today. Here’s what they say
“Similar to a beam of light, HSS uses ultrasonic energy to ’shine’ your sound on a very specific area. HSS converts music or voice into a complex ultrasonic signal prior to amplification. Once emitted, the converted sound forms a sound column in front of the emitter, which remains focused as it encounters a listener located in the narrow column of sound.”

This would bore anyone who isn’t a geek
Yamaha’s new T5n Amplifiers have been put head to head with an another, unnamed brand and came out on top. All you need to know is, they are good.
On the other hand, if you’re deprived of sleep, read this, from Yamaha
“Present at the test was Luca Nobilini of Lombardi Service, leading Italian front of house / recording engineer Toni Soddu and Yamaha’s Wouter Verkuijl.”
“On playing a CD through the system, the difference was clear,” says Wouter. “It seemed like the left side of the system was producing real music that came from a phantom source some metres in front of the actual line array while, on the right hand side, the music clearly came from the cabinets. Toni Soddu was astonished by the initial results!”
So if you’re in the market for some top notch amps - take them for a test run. They’re clearly worth making a noise about…

Scottish audio company ‘SFX’ have come up with a solution to a sticky situation…
‘SFX Gel Audio’ is a hydro-gel coupling product that can be used on…. well, almost anything. I kid you not…
Ok, sometimes I kid, but this is what SFX Technologies say:
“The design-patented SFX Gel Audio transducer produces high-quality sound when placed against a wide range of materials including glass, plastics, metals, wood, composites and even some fibrous materials.
When the SFX GA transducer is placed against a surface, that material becomes a loudspeaker.”
I for one hope the concept will stick…
